Teachers face a constant struggle between the amount of content they are required to teach and the increasing demand for more student-centered learning methods. Many teachers are left frustrated with these changes because they have not been taught what inquiry is or what to do with it and yet they are expected to use it to produce demonstrable learning gains in their students. What little is learned or heard about inquiry often indicates that it takes more time… time that teachers just do not have.
The goal of this class is to demystify and simplify the process of inquiry-based education while helping you incorporate inquiry into your existing lessons. We will explore the different levels of inquiry and focus on how to use inquiry to engage students in the learning process itself. Even though much of the hype surrounding inquiry-based education has focused on science education, it is widely applicable to all disciplines and all levels and this course is appropriate for any teacher looking to implement inquiry education in their classroom.
The course will meet in two face-to-face weekend sessions and will also include extensive inter-session and post-session work. The two weekends are Friday afternoons from 4-8 pm, and Saturdays from 8–4 pm. This course is also offered as a Guided Independent Study (GIS).
