COURSE DESCRIPTION: 4.5 CEUs
This course prepares educators to teach students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. It is an overview of the IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) definition of ASD and the nature, prevalence, age of onset, gender features, cultural and familial features, and educational implications of students with ASD. Evidence-based Best Practices will be considered. This course complies with the INTASC (Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium) standards and the CEC (Council for Exceptional Children).
*This course is available for 4.5 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) only, or the equivalent of 45 contact hours. The course is a great way to obtain added knowledge and skills to help you work with students with ASD, and to obtain recertification with 4.5 CEUs. If you are looking to receive your 282 certification, however, you must take a course for 3 graduate credits with a college or university.
Upon successful completion of this course, educators will be able to:
- *Understand the experience of ASD as presented by individuals with ASD and family members of individuals with ASD.
- *Understand and articulate the IDEA definition of ASD and evidence-based information regarding the possible causes, prevalence, and learning and behavioral characteristics of students with ASD.
- *Participate collaboratively in a special education process with students, colleagues, specialists, administrators and parents/guardians/advocates
- *Modify curriculum to accommodate the characteristics of students with ASD
- *Accommodate students’ needs through understanding the variety of types of ASD
- *Create quality education programs for students with ASD
- *Implement effective programming for young children with ASD, ages 3-5
- *Utilize best instructional approaches for teaching students with ASD
- *Utilize classroom management strategies for students with ASD
- *Utilize strategies for effective communication development
- *Utilize strategies for teaching social skills
- *Utilize technology that assists students with ASD
- *Utilize effective strategies for managing behavior and discipline challenges for students with ASD
- *Participate fully in transition planning for students with ASD
- *Demonstrate professional competencies per the INTASC principles for regular and special educators
- *Implement the Common Core Standards for students with ASD
- *Engage as life-long learners in ongoing, praxis-based action/research by utilizing data-driven research, peer-reviewed professional journals, and other professional development resources such as: The Council for Exceptional Children and Special Education Resources for General Educators (SERGE)
